I have run Windows Update in her computer and two updates has been detected. So it is clear that Microsoft has stopped WD support not only for Windows Vista, but also for Windows 7 machines. It's odd that no Windows 7 users have bothered to post anywhere, considering that they are about 100 times as numerous as Vista users now.The last definition update for Windows Defender has been done on June 12th 2018 and its number is : 1.269.1752.0 (exactly the same date and number as in my Vista's Windows Update).I have run Windows Update in her computer and two updates has been detected. So it is clear that Microsoft has stopped WD support not only for Windows Vista, but also for Windows 7 machines. The main purpose here is that Microsoft wants to oblige us to upgrade our computers to Windows 10!So, updates are really important right now, or the security tool you may rely upon to protect you at least a little bit may become the most dangerous thing on your old XP x64, Pos Ready2009 XP or Vista box, and not just there but on more modern systems as well (The Windows Defender on Windows 7 uses the same MMPE).What I did was to download the full update pack from Microsoft [here], and install it manually. Based on that, I wrote a very simple little batch script, that automates the process.(Of course if spyware specific to Vista exists, Microsoft probably hasn't concerned themselves with definitions for it since April 2017.) You might want to check Problem Reports and Solutions for June 12, and after manually installing a definition update.Windows XP has already gone down this road, so the very curious might find this thread interesting: https://msfn.org/board/topic/175514-microsoft-security-essentials-and-windows-xp/.
The latest definition I've installed is 1.269.1075.0. EDIT: There is a newer definition update 1.269.1752.0 for Vista as well. Why couldn't Vista detect it when checking for updates? So since nearly two weeks Windows Update haven't detected any WD definitions updates! However I haven't found any announcement made by Microsoft on that subject. So stopping suddenly support for Windows Defender have no sense. At least they should have officially announced this termination. Windows Defender in Vista says "there is no definition update available" when checking.Even more problematic was the fact that manual updates wouldn’t work anymore either.
It would download the new definitions, but not install them.
You can get wget by installing [GNU on Windows], a collection of free UNIX command line tools built for Windows.
