Learning to be accomodating
Once the goals and objectives are identified and expectations for the child's participation in that environment are established, the team selects or creates adaptations and accommodations that address those needs. Once implemented, their effectiveness should be assessed on an ongoing basis and revised as needed. If teachers recognize and understand the needs of SLD students, they can begin to accommodate these needs with resources at hand. Some technological resources include specific assistive devices for SLD students and are offered through campus support services.
The first step is to assess the child's abilities and the environment where the child will be spending time.
The following resources are helpful to schools of nursing looking to accommodate students with disabilities. (2014) White Paper on Inclusion of Students with Disabilities in Nursing Educational Programs.
